The project of Praça da Liberdade stemmed from the need to reconcile the architectural design of the Cultural Circuit of Praça da Liberdade and the public
areas which surrounds the square. It potentials the residual surrounding areas, increasing public use through its redesign, which reduces vehicle parking
areas, incentives indeterminate media ownership and the sidewalks suited to frequent postures, accessibility and traffic.
"Space is the unequal accumulation of time."
Milton Santos
The main goal of an urban project is to contribute to the establishment of an effective public domain, less attached to consumption and more focused on
the understanding of the city as a public place. Rather than being understated, the urban design should almost dissolve, acquiring an invisibility that allows
to emphasize its potentials as a support and should offer the people possibilities not even imagined previously. This premise allows the approach of
architecture and urban design to the infrastructure, which represents certainly the most discreet works, providing “essential supports for the
unpredictability of life”, as Le Corbusier said. The necessity of discretion avoids the monumental, individualistic work and gives attention to the
construction of territory, the seam of the urban texture, the constitution of a public space in fact, as well as to the recognition of history and time. This
sense suggests that the construction of a city can be only a collective work and an inter-generational effort. In addition, a new intervention in a
consolidated environment should stand as another layer among many others and increasing the virtues of what was built before.
Praça da Liberdade
Considered to be the first planned city in Brazil - in the late of 19th century - Belo Horizonte was planned with a positivist layout, resulting in the road design
of two grids overlapping, one of streets and other of avenues, shifted 45 degrees from each other. Although it represents nowadays a small portion of the
city, with nearly 3 million people, this original territory still is the area with better urban infrastructure.
In this city, the most symbolically spot, is Praça da Liberdade, where the city hall used to be located. A square which allows you to recognize much of the
key moments of architecture held in Brazil for over a century: the influence of France in landscaping; the eclectic architecture of the palaces; modern,
postmodern architecture; as well as contemporary interventions, turning the neoclassical buildings into cultural spaces and creating the Cultural Circuit of
Praça da Liberdade.
In the context of interventions of the Cultural Circuit of Praça da Liberdade, the project of upgrading the public areas surrounding the square was designed.
The project had the following objectives:
- Compatibility with both architectural and urban designs of the public areas, considering existing equipment and infrastructure and the future ones;
- Compatibility with the road project;
- Revitalization of urban pavements and equipment in a state of degradation;
- Compatibility between the sidewalks and the standards of the Municipal Legislation of Postures and accessibility;
- Ordering the landscape, always minimizing possible noise defined by diversity and overlapping of urban facilities and signs;
- The establishment of a greater unity in the treatment of the public spaces surrounding the square and its public buildings;
- Consolidation of a updated cadastral survey of Praça da Liberdade, as well of its surroundings.
